Restaurant review: Misi

Misi NYC restaurant review by Fraîche

Misi-ng Out on Italian Goodness? Not Anymore!

Foodies, it’s time to mark your calendars and book a table at Misi, one of the most famous Italian restaurants in NYC.

The rumors are true, they’ve got killer homemade pasta that will have you saying “Mamma Mia!” (but in a good way, of course). My dining companion Charlotte and I were on a mission to find out if Misi lived up to the hype and we were definitely not disappointed!

First things first, Misi’s location

Misi is located in the bohemian paradise of Williamsburg, just a hop, skip, and a jump from the water under the bridge.

As soon as you step inside, you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem. The spacious dining room has both bar seating and tables, and the open kitchen is a feast for the eyes.

We sat at the counter top which was a great way to watch the chefs create magic in the kitchen – it’s like having a front row seat to your own personal cooking show.

The vibes are not too dark but dark enough to give a very coy and romantic atmosphere with candles lighting in every corner.

Now, onto misi’s food

We started with the must-haves on the menu – the famous ricotta toast and mushroom starter.

As cheese lovers, we were a little apprehensive about the toast, but boy, were we in for a treat! The ricotta was perfectly balanced with the toasted bread, and the mushrooms were cooked to perfection with just the right amount of seasoning. Adding a little piece of mushroom to the toast for every bite is the way to go – trust us.

Next up, Misi’s pasta!

We ordered two types of pasta (because one definitely was not enough after all the bread and ricotta we had.) We ordered the gnocci sardi with pork sausage sugo, saffron, and fennel, and the sheep’s milk ricotta filled occhi, bottarga, lemon.

The gnocci

The gnocci sardi were good, but the texture could have been a bit better. It was too in between a soft gnocci and al dente penne, so we were a bit thrown off… however, the sauce and seasoning were so good, we didn’t mind too much.

The occhi was out of this world

The ricotta filling melted in our mouths with every bite, and the texture was like a pillowy cloud. We could almost compare it to a typical Chinese soup dumpling – but Italian. Our tip for maximizing your enjoyment of this dish? Pop the whole thing in your mouth and savor the moment while closing your eyes. This pasta is an experience for itself.

Misi’s prices

Now, let’s talk about the prices. Misi is reasonably priced, but like many restaurants in NYC, the wine can be a bit on the pricey side. But hey, when it comes to a dining experience like this, a little splurge is worth it.
